Your typical high school soccer game is slightly shorter than a college soccer game, with two 40 minute halves, for a total of 80 minutes of play. However, it will be overtime if the game is tied after the regulation time. College soccer overtime includes up to two 10-minute periods.
Since the clock doesn’t stop in soccer, the referee adds time back at the end of each half to make up for pauses in play. The referee indicates how much time gets added, but it’s not exact. That means a 90 minute game normally lasts 94 minutes or longer at the discretion of the referee. In soccer, players play until the referee blows the whistle. Previously, an attacking player (i.e., one in the opponent’s half of the playing field) was offside if, when the ball was “played” to him, fewer than three opposing players were between him and the goal.
